National Apprenticeship Week – Alisia’s story

It’s National Apprenticeship Week so we have taken the opportunity to catch up with our grounds horticultural apprentice, Alisia and find out a bit more about her journey and the work she has been doing.

Would you be happy to share a bit about your experience with the Parish?

It’s been lovely working with and getting to know the team. They are very keen to help me get stuck in and to show me the ropes and always make me feel included.

What does it mean for you to be an apprentice?

It gives me purpose, that at 23 there is always time to learn a new career – age doesn’t matter.

What do you love about the job?

I love being outside and being in nature’s company. I also feel very proud to be looking after the church grounds and the poppy memorial.

How do you see your future?

To stay at the Parish Council and work my way up!

What made you choose this apprenticeship?

As I said above I love being outside and this gives me the opportunity to learn whilst working.

What skills have you developed so far?

A very important one is how to use all the tools safely, for example the woodchipper. I have also learnt multiple things about looking after the grounds like line marking the cricket pitch.

What have been your proudest achievements so far?

Passing my woodchipper course and also looking after the poppy memorial.

What are you career goals?

I’m aiming high – I’d like to become head grounds person or ops manager here at the Parish Council.

What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?

Go for it! It’s a great way to learn on the job and it’s so rewarding at the end.

Thanks Alisia for sharing your story. It’s a pleasure to watch your progress and see you bloom!
